How much picture fits in 20KB
We ran eight sample photos through this page, each 1,920 pixels wide. Holding quality at 60 or above, a close-up of a flower came out at 338 by 338 pixels and a mountain lake at 693 by 462. A portrait got to 592 by 888. That is enough for a face in a form's photo box. Small print won't survive it.
Forms with limits this low
Exam, job, and government portals sometimes cap a photo or signature at 20KB or less. Read the notice for your form before you start, because many also set a minimum size or exact pixel dimensions. If yours gives exact dimensions, resize to them first, then come back and turn off Use fewer pixels if needed so that only the quality changes.
Getting more out of 20KB
- Crop close first. Bytes spent on a background are bytes the face doesn't get.
- A signature in dark ink on white paper fits easily, because flat white costs almost nothing.
- Take the photo in good light. Noise from a dim room looks like fine detail to the encoder and eats into the limit.
