Elevation gain calculator

Upload a GPX track or paste distance and elevation rows to get total ascent, descent, highs and lows, and gradient, with GPS noise smoothed.

Report a problem

Open a GPX track or paste rows to total the climb.

Total ascent is what your legs do; the sum on a cycling computer reads the same only when the noise threshold matches the device's smoothing. A threshold of 5 metres is a fair default for GPS tracks; barometric logs can take 1 or 2. GPX distances come from the track's own coordinates, so a track with no times still works, and route files without ele heights are refused rather than totalled as zeros. The profile chart is a downsampled sketch of the smoothed series, good for shape, not for reading exact heights off.

The threshold is hysteresis smoothing: an elevation change smaller than it never commits, so GPS jitter stops summing into your totals. At 0 the raw series is totalled as-is, jitter and all. The threshold is always metres, whatever the display system.
