Postal code distance calculator

Computes great-circle distances and initial bearings between postal codes from a bundled offline dataset, as bulk pairs or a full matrix.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Paste pairs or a code list to measure them.

Distances are great-circle: the shortest line over the Earth's surface, not a road or flight path. A postal code resolves to the dataset's representative point for the code, not an address, so a city-to-city figure can sit tens of kilometres from what a map route claims. Nothing is sent to a geocoder; lookups run against a bundled dataset in this tab. The bundled starter set carries a handful of sample rows per country, not the full GeoNames export, which the page credits under CC BY 4.0.

Job

CountryPostal codes are unique only inside one country, so one run reads one dataset
Mode
One pair per line: code, code, then an optional label. Up to 1,000 pairs.
Unit

Codes fold to uppercase with spaces and hyphens stripped. A code that has no exact match falls back to its longest leading part, down to two characters, and the pair is flagged when that happens. Spaces and tabs count as separators in matrix mode.
