Subtitle reading speed

Measure each subtitle cue's reading speed and duration against a guideline and flag the cues that read too fast or sit wrong on screen.

Paste a subtitle file and press Check reading speed.

Reading speed counts every visible character, spaces and punctuation included, and skips formatting tags; a line break counts as one space. Words are letter and digit runs, so don't is one word and a dash is none. Every cue that reads too fast gets a needs-at-least screen time, its characters divided by the characters-per-second limit; when the gap to the next cue cannot supply that time within the maximum duration, the text needs condensing. Up to 5,000 cues per check, files up to 2 MB, everything worked out in this tab.

Guideline and limits

Guideline preset

Leave a box empty to skip that check. Durations and gaps are in milliseconds. The Netflix figures are 20 characters per second for adult programs and 17 for children, 42 characters per line, 2 lines, 0.833 s minimum and 7 s maximum on screen. The BBC preset uses 170 words per minute, the middle of its 160 to 180 guidance, with 37-character lines.
