Internet speed test

Times cache-busted downloads of same-origin assets and reports your download speed in Mbps, stating plainly that upload is not measured.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Download only, and honest about it

This page measures how fast this site can push bytes to your browser. It does not measure upload, because upload measurement needs a receiving endpoint on the far side, and this tool will not claim a number it cannot measure.

The figure is decimal megabits per second, the same unit internet providers advertise, computed from bytes actually received over wall-clock time; when a file reports no readable bytes, the Resource Timing transfer size stands in. Results reflect the route between you and this site's server, not a nearby speedtest edge, so a distant server reads slower than your line's true ceiling. Wi-Fi, VPNs, and other traffic on the link all show up in the number, which is fair: that is the connection you actually use. Upload is not measured, and a single stream cannot saturate a very fast line, which is why the test climbs through progressively larger files until a byte floor or a time cap stops it. Nothing runs until you press the button, and retesting right away is safe: every fetch is cache-busted so no result can come from your browser cache.

Test

One press. The test fetches same-origin files, small first, climbing larger while time and a byte floor allow, and reports the largest transfer's rate.

What leaves your browser

The test downloads a few static files from this very site, with cache-busting query strings so nothing comes from your browser cache. No third-party speedtest service sees your traffic. This page leaves your browser only when you press the button; never on load, never in the background. Nothing is sent anywhere else. Google Analytics still measures the visit to this page, and it never receives what you run through this tool.

Runs on this device. Nothing is uploaded.
