Reading happens on your device with the text recognizer built into the browser, so the scan never uploads. Chrome on Android and ChromeOS ship one; most desktop browsers do not, and there the tool becomes an honest typographer: paste or type the text, get the same A4 PDF.

What this does not do: read handwriting, straighten a skewed scan, or fetch language packs. The PDF holds the recognized text typeset on A4, not the image itself, and a character with no shape in the built-in font (CJK, emoji) is drawn as ?. Messy scans give messy text, so read the preview before you download.

Text stays within 200,000 characters and 500 A4 pages. The PDF uses the built-in Courier font, so nothing is downloaded to draw it.
