Routing number

Five digits
Three digits
Cheque order 00002-004, or electronic 000400002

Institutions bundled in this build: 001 Bank of Montreal, 002 Bank of Nova Scotia, 003 Royal Bank of Canada, 004 Toronto-Dominion Bank, 006 National Bank of Canada, 010 Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, 016 HSBC Bank Canada, 030 Canadian Western Bank, 039 Laurentian Bank of Canada, 219 ATB Financial, 540 Manulife Bank of Canada, 614 Tangerine Bank, 815 Fédération des caisses Desjardins du Québec, 889 Credit Union Central of Canada.

Structure check only; Payments Canada publishes no check digit

Enter a transit and institution, or paste a combined string.

There is no check digit to compute: Payments Canada publishes no check character in the eight or nine digits, so this tool checks structure only, and a plausible wrong number is caught by the receiving institution, not here. The two forms carry the same routing in opposite orders, which is why a misread eight digit string silently names a different bank; if a payroll setup rejects the cheque form, the electronic form is the one direct deposit usually wants. Institution names come from a short dated list checked against Payments Canada sources in November 2026; mergers retire numbers, so an unlisted number is "not listed here", not a bad number.

Examples

Each field takes up to 64 characters. The combined string wins when it is present: eight digits read as transit then institution, nine digits as the electronic form.
