Voltage divider calculator

Computes divider output voltage, current, and dissipation, shows the load effect, and finds resistor pairs for a target output.

Report a problem

Enter a supply and two resistors to divide it.

Vout = Vin times R2 over R1 + R2, taken between the resistors. A load in parallel with R2 shrinks the bottom resistance and drags the output down, which is why a divider feeding anything but a high impedance input needs its load in the math. Real resistors add tolerance on top: the ratio of two 1 percent parts is not 1 percent accurate in the worst case, it is up to 2 percent off. And a divider wastes power the whole time it is powered, so for battery work pick the largest resistances your input current budget allows.

The divider

An op-amp input is effectively infinite; an ADC pin or a meter is not

Preferred value series

The pair search sweeps E12 (10%) from 1 ohm to 1 megohm and reports up to 5 pairs with different ratios, closest output first.

One suffix letter from p n u m k M G may follow a number. Values stay within ±1,000,000,000,000. The target must sit strictly between zero and the input: a passive divider only steps down.
