Staircase calculator

Design a straight staircase from total rise and run with risers, treads, stringer length, angle and headroom checked against IRC or UK code limits.

Report a problem

Enter a total rise, and a run or a tread depth, to lay out the flight.

The engine picks the smallest riser count whose equal risers all sit at or under the maximum, keeps every riser identical, and treats the upper floor as the last tread, so treads are one fewer than risers. The comfort figure 2 × riser + going lands between 550 and 700 mm on a stair people actually want to walk; Approved Document K requires that band on private stairs, IRC does not use it. Code limits here are the published headline numbers (IRC R311.7 and AD K, private stairs), not a substitute for the documents or for local amendments: landings, guards, handrails, winders and site conditions are outside this tool.

Give both and the headroom check runs: at the edge of the opening the clearance is the floor thickness plus the opening length times the pitch tangent. Leave either blank and headroom is skipped, not guessed.

Set a custom preset to unlock the limit fields, all in the working unit. The tight loft example uses 240 mm riser, 220 mm going, 1900 mm headroom, 44 degree pitch; loft stairs often need that relaxation.
