Square root calculator

Get exact square roots to 50 decimal places, simplified radicals, perfect-square checks, and the long-division method shown step by step.

Report a problem

Type a number to root it.

Every digit comes from the digit-by-digit long division method over BigInt, the same pencil recurrence taught in school: bring down a pair, find the largest d with (20p + d) × d that fits, write d. That makes the root exact at any precision in range, including 50 decimal places. Radical simplification factors the radicand by trial division and is capped at 10^12, where the cap is disclosed rather than guessed past; the root stays exact either way.

Find the square root of

Whole numbers or decimals, up to 60 characters
Decimal placesThe last digit is rounded from the next one, never truncated

E notation is refused, so write 2e10 as 20000000000. Thousands commas are ignored. Negatives answer with a multiple of i instead of pretending a real root exists.
