Room BTU calculator

Estimate the heating or cooling load a room needs in BTU per hour, kW and watts from dimensions, insulation, ventilation and design temperatures.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Enter the room size to get its design load.

This is a steady-state estimate for one room at the design temperatures: every surface contributes U x A x temperature difference, ventilation contributes its air changes, and the cooling path adds occupant, appliance, and window solar gains. It does not model orientation or shading beyond the flat solar input, thermal mass, intermittently heated rooms, or whole-house interaction, and it is not a substitute for a code heat-loss calculation. Heating sizes are conservatively quoted without internal gains, and a 10 percent margin is already included in the recommended figure.

U-values run 0 to 20 W/m²K, air changes 0 to 100, solar gain 0 to 1500 W/m², appliances up to 1,000,000 W. People and appliances count toward cooling only; heating stays conservative and ignores them.

All numbers stay within ±1,000,000 and temperatures within -100 to 200 °C.
