MTBF and MTTR calculator

Enter operating hours, failure count and repair hours to get MTBF, MTTR, failure rate and inherent availability, with worked examples and formula notes.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Enter the run hours and the failure count to get the figures.

These figures describe one period, nothing more. An MTBF of 1,460 h does not promise a failure every 1,460 h; with only a handful of failures the estimate is rough, and real failure patterns change over an asset's life. Inherent availability deliberately ignores waiting time, which is why the operational figure below it is usually the honest one.

Operating hours is the time the asset ran, not the calendar span. Repair hours are hands on tools; waiting for parts, permits, and travel goes in its own box, because that is where most availability quietly disappears.
