Motor slip calculator

Get synchronous speed, slip in rpm and percent, and rotor frequency for an induction motor, with a plain reading of the loading.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Enter a measured speed to read the slip.

An induction motor turns a little slower than the rotating field, and that gap is the slip. The rotor currents it produces have a frequency of their own: slip fraction times supply frequency, so a 4% slip on 50 Hz means 2 Hz in the rotor bars. Typical full-load slip runs under 1% on large machines to 5% or more on small ones, per IEC 60034-1 rating practice. Speeds above the field are kept and reported as negative slip: the machine is then driven, not driving.

The rated speed is optional. With it, the reading compares your measured speed against the plate and says whether the load sits lighter or heavier than nameplate duty.

Frequency runs 1 to 400 Hz, poles 2 to 12, and every speed stays within ±1,000,000 rpm. The tool sizes nothing and reads no current; it only turns one speed reading into the slip figures an induction machine implies.
