MOSFET gate resistor calculator

Sizes a MOSFET gate resistor from gate charge and driver voltage and reports peak current, switching times, and switching losses.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Enter the gate charges and driver settings to size the gate path.

The trade this tool cannot make for you: a small gate resistor switches fast, which keeps switching loss down, but it also dumps more current into the gate loop and invites ringing and EMI; a large one is quiet and slow. Watch the peak currents against what your driver can actually source and sink. The model is first order on purpose: no input capacitance, no internal gate resistance, no reverse recovery of the freewheeling diode, no parasitic inductance in the gate loop, and the switching-loss rectangle assumes hard switching with a clamped inductive load. Datasheet Qg figures are quoted at a specific Vgs and Vds; if your drive differs, the real charge does too.

The power stage numbers (Vds, Id, Rds(on), duty) only feed the loss estimates. The gate currents and switching times come from the charges, voltages, and resistances alone.

Every number stays within ±1,000,000,000; frequency up to 100,000,000 Hz, duty 0 to 100 percent. The plateau voltage must sit below the driver voltage and the two resistances cannot both be zero.
