Microstrip impedance calculator

Estimates microstrip or stripline impedance, effective permittivity, and delay from board geometry, or solves width for a target impedance.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Enter a stackup to see its impedance.

The microstrip form is the IPC-2141 approximation, valid as printed for w/h ratios of 0.1 to 3 and Er from 1 to 15; the stripline form is its symmetric twin, read against the plane-to-plane spacing. The tool computes outside those windows anyway and flags the answer instead of hiding it. What it does not model: etch undercut (the real trapezoid cross-section), solder mask over the outer layers, copper roughness, and weave variation. For boards that live or die on controlled impedance, a Hammerstad-Jensen calculation or a 2D field solver is the next step up.

Length is optional. Leave it empty and the tool reports delay per meter only; fill it in for the total delay of the run.

Widths and heights sit between 0.005 and 100 mm, permittivity between 1 and 15, every number within ±1,000,000. The width solver searches that whole width range for targets up to 1000 Ω.
