Matrix calculator

Run determinant, inverse, RREF, rank, and more on matrices up to 6x6 in exact fractions, with every row operation listed as a step.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Pick an operation; the result follows as you type.

Every entry is a fraction over whole-number arithmetic, so 0.1 is exactly 1/10 and a determinant comes back as -2 rather than -1.9999999996. Row swaps, scalings, and subtractions are each logged with the matrix they produced. What this tool does not do: eigenvalues and complex numbers (they are generally irrational and fractions cannot represent them), and anything past 6 x 6, where LAPACK and a numerical library are the better tools anyway.

Entries accept whole numbers, decimals, and fractions like -3/4. Empty cells count as 0, capped at 6 x 6 because exact fraction entries grow long during elimination.
