Debt-to-Income ratio calculator

Work out the front end and back end debt to income ratios lenders check, plus the change needed to reach a target ratio.

Report a problem

Enter a monthly income and the payments to see both ratios.

The front-end ratio is the housing payment over gross monthly income. The back-end adds every other debt payment lenders count: loans, card minimums, support you pay. US conventional underwriting leans on 28/36 and qualified mortgages use a 43 percent back-end line; Indian FOIR reads one total-debt limit instead, so set the two limit fields to match whichever rule you are checking. This is a pre-screen, not a lending decision: lenders also weigh credit history, reserves, and the loan product, and none of that lives here.

A loan you are applying for

A cleared payment reduces the other-debt side first and stops at zero. If the new loan is itself a mortgage, put its payment in the housing field instead, so the front-end ratio counts it.

Everything is a month figure of one currency, counted before tax. Limits land between 1 and 100 percent.
