Capacitor code calculator

Decodes ceramic and film capacitor markings into picofarads, nanofarads, and microfarads, with tolerance, voltage code, and reactance.

Report a problem

Type a printed marking to decode it.

Two significant digits plus a multiplier digit give the value in picofarads: 104 is 10 x 10^4 pF, and the digit 9 means x0.1, so 229 is 2.2 pF. The tolerance letter is absolute on small parts (B, C and D mean pF, not percent) and a percentage on larger ones. The voltage code is a base letter times a power of ten: 1H is 5.0 x 10 V, or 50 V. One honest limit: the marking tells you the nominal class, never the measured value, and Class 2 dielectrics (X7R, X5R, Y5V) lose capacitance under DC bias, sometimes by half. The real value only shows on a meter.

Optional, e.g. 1MHz

A bare number counts as Hz. The reactance Xc = 1 / (2 pi f C) shows in the result when a frequency is set.

Values stay within 1,000,000,000 pF (1000 uF). The multiplier digit 8 is not defined by IEC 60062, so markings like 108 are refused rather than guessed.
