Brick quantity calculator

Count the bricks or blocks a wall needs from its size, brick dimensions, and mortar joints, minus openings, with wastage and mortar volume.

Report a problem

Enter the wall size to count the bricks.

Bricks per square metre come from the brick face plus one joint each way, so 1 ÷ ((length + joint) × (height + joint)). The laid count is that rate over the net wall area times the leaf count, rounded up; the buy count rounds up again with wastage on top. Wet mortar is estimated as wall volume minus the bricks' own volume, which reads a little low because mortar outside the wall face and wedges cut for openings are ignored. Suppliers sell by the pack, so round the buy count up again to whole packs before ordering.

Brick dimensions run 1 to 2,000 mm, the joint 50 mm, wastage 50 %, walls within ±10,000 m, price 1,000,000. Ten millimetres is the standard UK and India joint; the US often lays close to 9.5 mm.
