Wikimedia commons audio downloader

Paste a Commons file link, see the license, author, and ready credit line, then download the original audio bytes after confirming the rights statement.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Paste a Commons file link and press Read license.

This tool saves the original file bytes from upload.wikimedia.org, never a re-encode, and it handles audio only: images and video from Commons are refused. Files with a readable license pass; the credit line shown with the result is what most CC BY and CC BY-SA licenses ask you to keep. Public domain and CC0 files need no attribution, and whether commercial use is allowed depends on the license named. The tool cannot judge fair use for you, and it does not archive files that Commons has deleted.

Commons file link

Required before the file can be saved.

File page links and direct upload.wikimedia.org links both work. The tool reads the license and author from the Commons API first; a file whose license cannot be read is refused instead of offered, and only audio files pass.

What leaves your browser

The link you paste is sent to commons.wikimedia.org's API for the license, author, and file URL, and the file bytes are then fetched straight from upload.wikimedia.org by your browser. Nothing goes anywhere else and nothing is stored. This page leaves your browser only when you press the button; never on load, never in the background. Nothing is sent anywhere else. Google Analytics still measures the visit to this page, and it never receives what you run through this tool.

Runs on this device. Nothing is uploaded.
