Violin tuner

Play synthesized reference tones for the G, D, A, and E strings or let the microphone listen and tell you flat, in tune, or sharp.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Detected note

Press Start tuning, allow the microphone, then bow one string at a time. The tuner names the nearest open string and how many cents it sits from pitch.

Reference tones

Tap a string to hear its open tone, then match it by ear. Tune A first, then work outwards in fifths.

Tuning order that works

Tune the A string first, then match D, E, and G to it in perfect fifths. Use the fine tuners first and the pegs only when a string is well off; turn pegs towards you to raise the pitch and away to lower it, a little at a time.

Detection follows the string's fundamental, not its loudest harmonic, and it listens between 170 and 720 Hz: low enough for a flat G string, high enough for E5. Tone length is capped at 4 seconds.

Tuner options

Reference pitch440 Hz for A4, 415 to 466
Show flat names, like Ab3 instead of G#3.
Reference sound

Tones are synthesized in this tab and the microphone is analyzed a few times a second. Nothing is recorded or uploaded, and starting the microphone stops any playing tone so the tuner never hears itself.
