Instrument tuner

A chromatic tuner that listens through the microphone, names the note, octave, and cents offset, and plays reference tones that duck while listening.

Report a problem

Strobe dial

Press Start tuning and allow the microphone. The dial shows how far the heard note sits from the nearest chromatic pitch.

Start tuning to read the microphone, or type a frequency below.

This is a chromatic tuner: it names whichever of the twelve notes sits nearest and reports the distance in cents, equal tempered, against your A4 calibration. It handles one note at a time; chords and double stops break single-pitch detection, and noisy rooms can drop the reading out. The microphone is analyzed a few times a second, never recorded, and no audio leaves the device. Reference tones are synthesized here and pause while the tuner listens, so it never tunes against its own sound. The tool does not transcribe melodies, tune to custom temperaments, or replace a strobe service on a grand piano.

Type a Hz value instead of using the microphone

The dial octave and note pick drive the reference tone. Reference tones pause while the microphone listens, so the tuner never measures its own sound.

Detection covers 28 to 2400 Hz. In tune means within 5 cents of the target.
