Guitar tuner

Tune a guitar through your microphone across eleven tunings, or play per-string reference tones, with a cents needle and A4 calibration.

This tool is in beta

Still being tested. If a result looks wrong, tell us.

Report a problem

Detected note

Press Start tuning, allow the microphone, then pluck a string. The tuner names the note and how many cents it sits from pitch.

Reference tones

Tap a string to hear its open tone, then match it by ear.
The low strings on dropped tunings sound close to what small laptop microphones stop hearing. If Drop C or Open C will not register, tune that string by ear against its neighbor, or touch the string lightly above the twelfth fret and pluck there: the harmonic sounds an octave higher, and the tuner reads that fine.

Detection follows the string's fundamental through its first harmonics, capped at 5 seconds per reference tone. It names one note at a time and assumes a single ringing string; it will not parse full chords, track vibrato, or correct for intonation problems in the guitar itself.

Tuner options

Reference pitch440 Hz for A4, 415 to 466
Show flat names, like Bb instead of A#.
Target stringAuto picks the nearest open string; a pin compares against that exact string
Reference sound

Tones are synthesized in this tab and the microphone is analyzed a few times a second. Nothing is recorded or uploaded, and the tuner never measures its own reference tone.
