# Speech time calculator

Estimates how long a script takes to speak at slow, average, fast, or custom pace, adding sentence, paragraph, and pause time plus a section timeline.

Paste your script or give a word count, then press Estimate.

This is a planning estimate, not a stopwatch. The sentence count is terminator-based, so abbreviations like "e.g." count as sentence ends, and a trailing run of words without punctuation counts as one sentence. [pause] markers are stripped before the word count because you do not speak them. Silent reading uses 238 words a minute, the average silent rate from Brysbaert's 2019 review, which is not a speaking rate. The tool cannot hear delivery, audience laughter, or where you will actually slow down; time a real rehearsal for that.
