# Moon phase, moonrise, and moonset

How much of the moon is lit tonight, when it rises and sets over your day, where it sits in the sky right now, and when the next new and full moons fall — for a curated city or your own coordinates.

Datedate set after load

- The illuminated fraction and the named phase come from SunCalc’s lunar ephemeris (truncated ELP-2000/82 series); the eight phase names cut at ±0.02 around the exact quarters.
- The moon’s age in days multiplies the phase by the MEAN synodic month (29.53 days). True lunar months vary by around ±7 hours, so the age is labeled an estimate — the fraction is the exact number.
- Moonrise and moonset are the earliest of each across your LOCAL day — the search spans both UTC days the local day touches, so far-from-Greenwich places are not cut at midnight.
- The phase disc is a diagram (area = illuminated fraction, lit side by waxing/waning), not a render of the actual moon.

City list curated from GeoNames (geonames.org — cities500 database, CC BY 4.0), snapshot 2026-08-24, bounded to 151 major cities across six regions. Coordinates rounded to 2 decimals; ids are product slugs, not GeoNames ids.
