# Images to GIF

gifenc quantizes every frame to 256 colors (GIF is palette-only, always lossy on photos). A shared palette keeps colors stable across frames; per-frame palettes compress photographic content better. Contain-mode letterbox bands render BLACK unless you set a background fill: the encoder writes RGB only, so unset alpha becomes black rather than transparent.
