# Enhance faces in photos

Detection and enhancement are two separate steps, and both stay in this tab. Detection is the browser's own FaceDetector, so its quality is the browser's quality: straight-on faces find boxes readily, profile views and very small faces often do not, and a miss means that face is left alone rather than guessed. Enhancement is a classic unsharp mask plus a contrast lift around mid-gray, applied only inside the boxes with a soft blend at every edge so the touched region melts into untouched pixels. The rest of the photo is byte-identical to the original.

Faces are detected, never recognized: no identity is computed, no model runs, and nothing is uploaded. This is sharpening and brightness, not generative retouching, so a face that is blurry beyond repair gets a sharper blurry face, not new detail. For grainy scans, denoise first and keep the strength low. The quality slider applies to JPG and WebP only, PNG always encodes losslessly.
