# Scientific notation converter

Convert numbers to scientific, engineering, and E notation and run sig-fig-correct arithmetic on two numbers with the working shown.

Enter a number to convert, or two numbers to combine.

Numbers are handled as exact decimals (a sign, a BigInt mantissa, and a power of ten), not binary floating point, so 0.3 − 0.1 comes out as exactly 0.2 and long products keep every digit. "As written" applies the standard rules: multiply and divide keep the fewer significant figures of the two operands, add and subtract keep the coarsest written decimal place; ties round half up. The plain decimal form is written out only up to 400 characters, and a division that never terminates is carried at 40 significant digits and labeled as rounded. What it does not do: repeating-decimal notation (0.(3)), unit conversions, or exact fractions.
