A log only tells the truth between full tanks. Fuel added on a partial fill-up is still counted, but a span only starts and ends where you marked the tank full, because the leftover fuel in the tank is unknown anywhere else. The cost lines come from the price column at the pump, not from any live fuel price. If your car reports its own figure, compare it after a few tanks: onboard economy readouts tend to flatter.
